Schools: Monopolies?

Normally, I don’t go too deep into politics when I come to posting here, especially American politics. Not that I want to avoid flames, but it’s simply because I tend to misrepresent myself too much and it’s just not within the scope of this blog. Education in an impartial perspective - with relevant and helpful info - is the goal here.

But I’ll make an exception on this one and actually tell you that there’s this interesting post over at Mister Snitch!, talking about how public schools are viewed as monopolies. Well, you might ask what can you expect from the post? Some excerpts below:

Besides the missing school construction money (about which no answers are forthcoming) we’ve had headlines concerning grotesque and absurd overtime payments made to school workers, especially custodians. Some OT payments were ‘justified’ to the Jersey Journal as going toward central air conditioning repair - even though Hoboken’s schools have window air conditioners.

 And this:

We recently heard Milton Friedman speak to this issue on Charlie Rose. He called public schools a ‘monopoly’ whose hold was maintained by the powerful and politically connected Teachers’ Union. The solution to education is always framed in terms of ‘more money’, despite continuing stories of tremendous waste.

And also this:

We were struck by the idea of monopoly as the root of the problem. Politicians have an interest in keeping this wasteful patronage system intact, and so any attempt at reform is met with accusations of being ‘anti-education’ and resisted fiercely.

Interesting read, especially if you haven’t been keeping up with American news.

I appreciate your interest in the story. In many cities, school taxes actually exceed municipal taxes. Put simply - it costs more to run the schools than to run the rest of the city. There’s so much wrong that it’s well beyond the scope of a blog post.

The 20/20 documentary airs (in the USA) on Friday, Jan. 20.

    Thanks again.
