JPA Scholarships: Even More Information

The Star Online - the online version of one of Malaysia’s largest newspapers - recently published an informative article on this year’s incarnation of the Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam (JPA) scholarships. It summarises all the recent information released by JPA itself on the statistics and procedures of the scholarships.

They begin by saying that applicants have about a one-in-twelve chance of winning a JPA scholarship (derived from the released scholarship application places), continuing on with this year’s revamped scholarship criteria. Of course, they highlight PSD Director-General’s key statements:

Academic merit is determined by the number and combination of subjects that the applicant has taken which are relevant to the course he or she has applied for.

It is not based on the total number of As they achieved.

And they make sure to explain the basic format of the scholarship application process: The group interview in the beginning, followed by the new Overseas Scholarship Programme Application Test 2006. Weightage this year stands at 65% for academic performance, 15% for interview performance, 10% for socioeconomic background and 10% for extracurricular performance.

Star also clarifies the popular misconception that there is a cap on the maximum amount of income earned by the applicant’s family to be eligible for the scholarship, and then explains the MARA scholarship that actually does have such an income cap. But I’m not too sure about JPA’s assertion that there is no quota system for the PSD scholarships. If that was true, it wouldn’t be too difficult to publish the breakdown of successful bumiputera and non-bumiputera applicants, would it?
In any case, that issue is relatively unimportant. More importantly, the average cost of the scholarships is revealed, with around RM 1 milion tagging a medical scholarship while around RM 800,000 for the rest. But since there are scholarships to India, Indonesia and Russia that definitely cost far less, the figures given probably cover US and UK scholarships only.

And that’s about it. If you are a JPA scholar, good luck. One-in-twelve isn’t exactly the best of odds after all.

I’m a non-malay… but I got the JPA scholarsp twice… for my BEng & PhD to UK… most of JPA scholarship holder are those medic student… if anybody wanna apply for a JPA scholarship they must be a very good student at first place because JPA will give the mark according to the student academic result… that one ‘maybe’ account for 50%… then field of study as well as a family background… probably medical related course have more chances of getting schlarship than other field… low income family could also help… so what do you need to wait for… go get the form & try your luck… probably the chance is small but unless you try, you’ll never have such fortune….

Just wanna inform you guys about JPA scholarship…

I got an info saying that JPA scholarship offer will be published in local newspapers and on the web www.jpa.gov.my at 4,5 11,and 13th March 2007..

oohh anyway, anyone feels free to tell me on how do i apply for TESL course under BPG/Eng ???

and yeah that’s what I heard, 12th March is the ‘most-waiting’ day for all candidates..
But some reckons that it would be out on 13th March..

Jpa scholarship is now opened to all qualified scholars…
check ot www.esila/jpa.gov.my..
the scholarship can be applied online now and it’s free…

well, i have read a lot of complaints, suggestions and arguements in this old issue of JPA scholarship…tragedy goes on and on every year…

But, this year, very lucky that i am granted the scholarship to study engineering in New Zealand, what a surprise!! Well, let me give all of you a clearer picture of what is going on…

In my case, i am not scoring very well in my SPM, just manage to get 10A1s and 2A2s. The worst is that my co-curriculum record is almost a plain white paper, not holding much posts and winning much prizes…Everything that i have is totally a great disadvantage for me to compete with the other top scorers…

But, to my amazement, i am granted the scholarship!!!! So, i would say that, to get this scholarship, sometimes (or most of the time) you need to have your luck on your side… (well, believe me, i am a chinese!!)
