10-month A-Level Programs?

I have now another reason to say Malaysia is a “unique” country: The existence of “accelerated” Cambrideg A-Level programs that require only 10 months of study. Well, when I say accelerated, it is definitely not in the positive sense. Students that take up these programs have to cram at least 1 and a half years of content within only 10 months, and take the same exams as a student who has studied at least 8 months more than them. Of course, these programs are a lot cheaper than the proper 18-month ones.

All in all, it looks like only the most desperate of students will join such “accelerated” programs. But when we think a bit further, there are advantages to such programs. Really intelligent and hardworking students will be able save both time and money. Students that prefer more working experience to educational instruction will be able to realize their desires as well.

But in most cases, students will definitely lose out in terms of their preparation and thus, academic results. This is especially true given the rote-learning nature of A-Level programs. As a result, top-rate universities that require high grades will thus be out of the question. Considering the fact that those that take up such programs cannot afford to enter such universities in the first place, however, what is there to lose?
